Spring Festival

The Spring Festival originated from worshiping gods and ancestors at the beginning and end of the year in the Yin and Shang Dynasties. It has a history of more than 4,000 years.

The Spring Festival has a long duration, a wide geographical span, and rich festival activities. It is the most important, grand, and traditional festival with the most extended history and busiest China.

During the Spring Festival, the Han and some ethnic minorities in China hold various activities to celebrate. These activities mainly focus on offering sacrifices to ancestors and gods, paying tribute to ancestors, removing the old and fabricating the new, welcoming the jubilee and receiving blessings, and praying for a good year. From the 23rd (or 24th) of the twelfth lunar month, people have started the celebration: cleaning houses, washing hair and bathing, preparing utensils for the festival, etc. All these activities have a common theme, that is, "saying goodbye to the old and welcoming the new". People welcome the new year and spring with grand ceremony and enthusiasm.
